Just type in any word or phrase in Irish and hear it spoken in native Gaoth Dobhair Irish. www.abair.tcd.ie/index.phpWhy not try some lines from Enya songs?

Thanks for the link Sky. That’s a great find. I typed in: Who can say where the road goes, where the day flows, only timeAnd I was surprised by the resembles. Some words are very recognizable. It's interesting to hear.

This is a great link, thanks Sky! I didn't realize you could plug English into the translator. Cursing at work will be so much more circumspect now. Going to have fun plugging the lyrics, Irish and English, in to this.

Not sure why, but I couldn't get this to work at all for me. The problem probably can be found between the chair and the keyboard, but I had no success. John

What you have to do is click on a button called Dean Sinteis. Since it's in Irish, I totally overlooked it the first time I tried it. That was my error, but you may be experiencing something different. It's a very neat site!

How accurate is the pronunciation, Sky? I'm typing in various lyrics from the songs and having fun with this.

The pronunciation can be a little robotic sometimes but on the whole it's quite good. I think it's a great resource for learners.

I've seen Gaelic language study programs taught in various areas around Ireland. One program is taught in Donegal. I would love to do that one. Imagine--a few hours a day studying Gaelic, down to the beaches or into the mountains in the late afternoon for photography, and wind up the evening at Leo's for dinner with, maybe, a Brennan or two on stage.

Road trip!
Alrighty, TC, we have a plan. Now, if we start saving up right now for a trip to Ireland, a summer study course on Gaelic, we ought to be about to afford the air fare in say...ten years or so...
I have a friend who did a tour of Irish religious sites, both modern and ancient, a couple summers ago. They stayed at the centers, studied the language, took day hikes, toured cathedrals, and had evenings/weekends free to wander. It sounded great to me!

Just as a follow up to my previous post and the suggestions made, I am of the mind that it has to do with some sort of conflict between the online synthesizer and the speech on my computer. I cannot get it to work on the PC or Mac, even as I believed it had a better chance of working on the Mac because the screen reader is integrated into the OS. I need to experiment some more, but that seems to be the case.

I find this to be a fascinating tool. I typed in a few random sentences to see what would come out. I did use a few Enya lyrics after that.

What is the Gaelic for "Who can say where the road goes, where the day flows, only time"? I want to compare the words to English.

What is the Gaelic for "Who can say where the road goes, where the day flows, only time"? I want to compare the words to English. "Cá bhfios áit a dtéann an bóthar, áit a dtéann an lá - ach ag an am amháin".. These things don't translate so well as they aren't literal.
