Riene, I've never seen Shepherd Moons explained clearer than that. Thank you! It's one album whose overall theme has escaped me--until now. I've never read the Miss Read books (do I have the author correct?) and didn't know the story of Miss Quinn. I finally see a reason for HCIKFS being on the album. Great analysis. I can't wait to see more opinions on themes of the songs, overall theme of the album. To the themes so brilliantly shelled out by Riene, I would add friendship β understood also quite metaphysically β sincere, caring, sheltering, motivating, providing space and comfort, also leading onto a life adventure. It all dawned on me not that long ago when I read the liner notes from the "Shepherd Moons" memento. It was when I turned my attention especially to "Angeles", which has become a sort of the heart of the album since then. I have no words to describe how I love this album. It's also amazing to me how my first imaginations to the music, although I didn't even know English too well back in the day, corresponded to these themes. A pool of epiphanies to this day. This remains my favourite album, despite loving them all, SM is special to me

Hmm... What does Shepherd Moons make me think? My favourite Enya album has always been The Memory Of Trees until Dark Sky Island, now my favourites are both of them, Dark Sky Island indeed has a feeling of retro Enya and at least in structure is similar to The Memory Of Trees, that's why it has become my second favourite. Anyway, Shepherd Moons, for one it's an album of space because of it's name but the album is more Celtic and personal, it's an album of blue because of it's colour (must be the favourite one of Riene and RichardF, just kidding), it's an album of somewhat contentment like some other ones when for example The Memory Of Trees is longing, like all Enya albums it's an image of Enya's life, thoughts and feelings during that period of time. I don't know what else to say, hope I haven't forgotten anything.

Also at that stage 3 years seemed an age to wait for an album, the previous two appeared to have been about 18 months apart. It contains 2 cover songs, the only 2 in th Enya cannon, and Carribean Blue is obviously and self-conciously Orinoco II . That's not to say that I don't like a large number of the songs on the album, particularly Lothlorien.

What struck me most of Shepherd Moons is that someone acknowledged their existence !
I mean, it's something - almost a "tiny little detail" - that almost no-one knows about !
Edit : It's often the small, little details that matter. They can shape something bigger.

Yes. It seems to be such an odd name. It's basically like two words thrown together which have nothing in common. Only those with finer antennas will be intrigued. I guess.

I wonder who has more say in naming the albums? Roma, I'd guess?

"(45) Enya: βAngelesβ "The early-'90s was a time when I was very introspective. I liked the blank quality of new age music, though some is better than others. It gave me a chance to lie down and think; itβs truly the background music to your mind. It was enjoyable for a while, but then I got out of that period. "Enya actually wrote a tune called βAngelesβ for L.A. Story, though we ended up using two or three pre-existing songs of hers in the movie and she released that song later. Looking back, itβs the perfect music for that movie, and for that era too." pitchfork.com/features/5-10-15-20/9742-steve-martin/"Steve Martin", Pitchfork issue October 27 2015

Slightly out of topic, but β speaking of "Angeles" β it has always seemed to me a song which came to be with lyrics written first and only then set to music. Whole album is, to me, full of such whimsical and mystifying peculiarities, which is in part responsible for its evocative power it has continuously displayed throughout my life, becoming the very special one (*high five* Moe!) for many non-musical reasons too.

I guess. we could also speculate that Roma and Nicky are Eithne's Shepherd Moons perhaps? Revolving around her, sharing in her glories but always more on the background.
