Now we're talkin'... Any further discourse I have concerning such things can be labeled "Notes From The Tundra" (an inside joke).
I believe 'IITR' is packed with hidden meaning and references. Ardens, your thoughts about her symbolizing rain is just as probable as anything else, and that is the type of in-depth thinking needed when considering this video.
'IITR', like it or not, was meant to be barren. I'm speaking of the stark white background. This allowed for the progression of the meaning to be seen as it unfolded. Unlike some of her other videos, such as 'Only Time' and 'Caribbean Blue', where the scenery was filled to the brim, 'IITR' needed to be done starkly, less the intent of it be lost. Different songs; different visuals; different delivery.
Loneliness, yes, but I thought the emphasis was placed at first on heartbreak and all associated with it, followed by change, then acceptance, and finalized with promise. I am very much agreed on the renewal aspect. This evident by the spreading tendrils that sprout at first only further blackness, but even from that came form and color. That from the agony of it and how it pervades the core of one's emotional being as it enters into other areas of one's life. That like the Phoenix, there is rebirth from destruction. In the end, what doesn't destroy us only makes us stronger, to use an old adage I'm sure everyone is familiar with.
Now the question I have with it all is are we looking at a song that just involves love? Maybe not. It could be Enya reviewing her life in general so far, especially in regards to her work. The break from Clannad and the struggle before her big break could be represented by the black heart. Curious to me when the three butterflies appear and then later the humming bird. The Trio themselves and 'Orinoco Flow'? Another thought I had when this video was first received was unlike others when it was theorized that the red sun was in reference to Japan and perhaps it was a hidden message to her fans from that country. Indeed, the artwork involved did seem oriental in nature, but I haven't completely bought into that. I see it more as a reference to 'Aldebaran', the red star.
Just a few more things that have stood out to me and there is more. Unfortunately, my free time today is limited, but I would like to explore this video further. If I'm off-base with this in your opinion, please let me know. As is said, "Gold is where you find it", and in the case of 'IITR', we shouldn't accept or judge it on face-value.
We need to dig a little deeper.
