Do you celebrate a winter holiday? If so, which is it?5th December: MikulΓ‘sSanta is not the one who brings presents on Christmas Eve. Here, in Transylvania (in Hungarian families) the Angel brings the presents and the tree on Christmas Eve. MikulΓ‘s is the Hungarian version of Saint Nicholas. He pays kids a visit on December 6th (or the 5th evening). Children prepare for his visit by writing him letters, behaving well, cleaning their boots, and putting them outside, or on the windowsill. MikulΓ‘s usually brings sweets, oranges, and smaller gifts/toys. Also for those who were a little naughty during the year, he brings a βvirgΓ‘csβ (decorated birch sticks). KarΓ‘csony-Christmas:The Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve. Usually, children arenβt home during the decoration, and when they arrive, the presents brought by the Angel are already under the tree. We usually bake mΓ©zeskalΓ‘cs (gingerbread) walnut/poppy seed rolls. What are your favorite holiday foods? Do you prepare anything different or special? My favorite holiday foods are stuffed cabbage, walnut & poppy seed rolls. (there is a lot of debate about whether the poppy seed or walnut rolls are tastier, but I like them both ) What else is special about your holiday? Do you have a certain outfit, tradition, meal, ceremony, song, or dance you do during this time?Christmas caroling is a tradition over here, too, although these days itβs rather practiced in the countryside. We have a lot of Christmas songs, including: Csendes Γ©j (Silent Night), MennybΕl az angyal (Angel from Heaven), PΓ‘sztorok, pΓ‘sztorok(Shepherds, shepherds) KarΓ‘csonyi pΓ‘sztortΓ‘nc -ZoltΓ‘n KodΓ‘ly -this one is usually sung by choirs A kis JΓ©zus megszΓΌletett (Little Jesus is born)
