I have loved this instrumental since Am was released - to me it perfectly captures the feeling of floating on the water, feeling at peace with the world.
However, I know that some fans find it a weak track on the album.
What really intrigues me is this: Drifting was nominated for a Grammy as "best instrumental" and I have to assume Enya was most pleased by this. It was a first for he after all, and the honour was bestowed on a composition for which she alone was responsible, in that no lyrics were written.
The nomination could be "read" as her peers saying "Enya, this is the best instrumental you have ever written." Yet many of us prefer TMOT or WM.
What's your take on Drifting? Did it deserve the Grammy nomination?

It got nominated for a Grammy?
I don't know. It's an ok piece, yes, evocative of "drifting leaves" or something, but I certainly wouldn't rank it among her best instrumentals.
I wonder what the competition against it was that year?

Honestly, I was surprised that it was nominated. Don't get me wrong, I like the song ok...but...I kind of find it...well I skip over it a lot. Best instrumental? It's hard for me to say anything bad about any of her music, because I really do appreciate the talent behind them, but Drifting just doesn't do it for me. I would have nominated Oriel Window first.

I like Drifting quite a lot. I also like River and Solar Wind, so my tastes for the instrumentals runs to the more freeflowing ones rather than the more structured pieces.
I wondered why Drifting was nominated, not because it's not a good instrumental, but it was surprising to see anything of Enya nominated in a Pop category. I wonder who nominates songs? Does the record label or the artist request that a song be entered into a certain category? Does a Grammu committee go through all of the music and sort songs and albums into categories for voting?
I think the nomination of Drifting might have been an attempt to move Enya out of the New Age category and have people look at her work from a broader viewpoint. Wouldn't the prestigue of Amarantine have been greater if it had been the Best Pop Album instead of Best New Age Album? If Drifting had won Best Pop Instrumental, it would have presented her music to people in a different way.
A George Benson song won the Best Pop award. I can't remember then name of it though.

I agree OWB, Oriel Window is a great melody and I love the fact that it sounds like it was performed on a real piano as opposed to a keyboard.
