Hearts of Space is a US New Age radio program that's been around since the early 80's. HOS was my first introduction to Enya. I had heard her recordings on one earlier HOS program (#178 Celtic Legacy), but it was the St. Patrick's Day program, The Irish Wave, that made me go, "wow!"
This is Steven Hill's introduction to The Irish Wave:
"This week we're celebrating St. Patrick's day with new and old spacemusic from Ireland, in a program called THE IRISH WAVE. We'll be hearing once again from the wonderful Irish singer and keyboard player ENYA, with music from her American debut album, the soundtrack for a BBC television series called THE CELTS, and a selection of pieces from her followup album WATERMARK, as well as some Gaelic songs from two CD singles released only in Europe.
We'll also hear a choral piece from MACALLA, a 1985 album by CLANNAD, the popular Irish group which includes Enya's older sister MAIRE*** and two of her brothers; plus Irish influenced music by American composer/performer BILL DOUGLAS, from his debut album JEWEL LAKE, by American Celtic harper KIM ROBERTSON from GRATITUDE, and by another contemporary Irish group called ALTAN.
Coming up next, Australian composer PERCY GRAINGER'S orchestral arrangment of the "IRISH TUNE FROM COUNTRY DERRY", better known as DANNY BOY. This is true Hearts of Space music and beyond a doubt some of the most exquisitely beautiful string writing I've ever heard, in a flawless recording on the TELARC label.
You can hear this music as sad, or beautiful, or beautifully sad. On the other hand, some of the most joyous music anywhere comes from the Irish tradition, and the Irish gift for melodic lyricism is always present.
So if it makes you happy, feel free to dance β if it's sad, cry yer eyes out, darlin's. It's music from THE IRISH WAVE - on this hour of Hearts of Space."
***He pronouced her name... "MARE" like .. a horse. Even in 1989, I thought that was probably not right. But I didn't know what else it could be!
