Does Enya's use of lip-synch during her current promotional tour matter to you?
I ask this knowing that we all would love to hear her "live" - but we all know that lip-synch has been a hallmark of her performances for a long time.
She has received a fair amount of criticism for this in the past. So how big an issue is it now?

It does not matter, but I remember the "Amarantine" live versions and... well, it will be good to listen this again. "May it Be" at the 74th Academy Awards was also quite good, so why not? Maybe the important thing is to see her there. Maybe without the multi-layered vocals (that could be played-back), the intrincate songs would be a bit weak, and disappoint some people (it is not my pont of view).

I suppose it depends on the song. Some songs, like OCOCE, would sound perfectly fine solo and live, with a choir at the back for the chorus. Others, the layered effect songs, could be done with her live voice over a vocal track.
I'm not crazy about lip-synching. I think of famous examples when the tape dragged and it became very painfully obvious that the song was being faked.I'd hate that to happen to Enya. Even in this digital age, it doesn't take much to mess up a performance.

I think there are some situations where lip synching is fine, I perfer the real thing, but sometimes the technology or the setting does not support a live performance...
Now if I pay for a live performance, I better see one...I have always thought that it is a rip off to go see an artist only to find out most of the show was technology...

I don't mind the lip synched performances as much as others do, but I do have a concern. I think And Winter Came is going to bring in a newer audience for Enya, and I think these lip synched performances are going to hurt her a little with the new crowd.

I hadn't thought about this till now, but I think you are right - the "new" Enya audience does not necessarily know Enya's liking for lip-synched performances as we oldies do, and may be turned off by them. I hope not, but yes, it's a valid concern.

I understand why she does these lip-synched performances but I have enjoyed the few live ones she has done. I am just happy to see her perform but I do hope she will so some live stuff in the future.

I'm happy to see her either way. I would prefer live but, like has already been mentioned here, it may not be do-able & I'm ok w/ a lip-synched performance. I just fear that an "Ashley Simpson" moment could happen & that could hurt her in the US possibly.

Well, I don't mind about that. I'm just happy to see her in live.

She's been lipsyncing since the begining; her style of music, in it's current format, just doesn't translate to live. Personally I'm not fussed: I like the highly honed studio production, it's not a style I'm too fussed to see live.

Good share. I'm not convinced how 'live' some of those are, but more than I knew about. Have to have a good listen later.

She did a good version of Even In The Shadows. Echoes In Rain which had her singing live over the recording was nice too. Enya's Only Time live performance is also good and true to her voice. Amarantine started a bit shaky then it really got better. Still for some tracks Enya had to sing over the recording such as The Humming on Japanese TV. It's relatively easy for the lower and main notes since they are close to her natural speaking voice. It's the high notes which are obviously played back from the recording. When you have multi-layers the choice you have to make is do I just sing the main melody from low to mid notes or do I switch in some places by singing the high harmony(when there are harmonies present in the composition) just for a change?
May It Be is trickier to sing totally live because you have to be at your best to bring out all the nuances of the song, having to alternate from the low rich notes to the higher registers.

I don't mind lip-synch as long as it is done properly. In some occasions in the past, the lip-sync might have been a bit out of synchro so to say, especially if instrumentalists are not playing live either. It hurts my soul if I see an out-of-synch performance...

At least Enya is not a touring artiste who sells loads of tickets who has to resort to lip synch just so that she can dance, sing and play instruments while sounding impossibly perfect all the time! If she wants to sing above the recorded vocals that's fine with me for an appearance or maybe some minimal inclusion of live instruments with a mix of live and recorded backing vocals and music for a publicity appearance or a one off variety show featuring many artistes. I'm sure she has done a combination of what I've mentioned.
