Friends of mine have been holding their own celebrations for the past 20 years or so, with the 'usual' fare of lamb stew, colcannon, Irish soda bread, and a couple of other items to nibble upon. They also have several Irish whiskies that are sipped upon, along with a couple of Irish beers.
I've gone to their party a few times, and enjoyed catching up with friends that attended.

Wearing my St. Paddy's hat plus my Donegal sweater (the one I'm wearing in my profile photo!), listening to appropriate music as well as outing my tinwhistles & bodhrΓ‘n!

The last couple years I have made Irish soda bread and had a slice with Irish Breakfast tea. I occasionally remember to wear green, and will listen to Maura O'Connell, Sean Keane, Clannad, or Enya.
Not into colcannon, much less beer or whiskey.
*I'm sure my Irish ancestors just rolled their eyes and muttered among themselves.*

Celebrate--not a whole lot. I don't dig out anything green to wear, or grab special music for the day. The only thing is that I do use it as an excuse for a yearly watching of John Ford's The Quiet Man. Ford was an Irish romantic, and the film reflects that. What I like about the film is the sense of homecoming--a man returning to the place where he was born, wanting to find some peace in his life, and finding people who welcome him. And John Wayne and the incomparable Maureen O'Hara (who recruited most of her Irish family as extras in the film--and John Wayne's kids are in the film as well) are dynamic on screen. It's a nice way to spend a couple of hours of the evening with something to drink that isn't Guinness...
Oh--well, I'm jamming with some musician friends on Saturday the 16th.. they want to play Irish music (sigh...)

My wife is Irish/Italian or Italian/Irish depending on which side you're talking to. So we always cook up a weeks worth of corned beef and cabbage. Depending on the weather we may try to catch a local parade in one of the nearby cities.

Looks like some of the staff of The Irish Festival of Oulu have already started to celebrate St. Paddy's here in Oulu, and they do it in a very COOL WAY!

At least I'm not, actually my parents once bought one can of Guinness just to try it but even they said it was too tough for their tastebuds and as I'm an absolutist, I refused to drink the rest too!
Suvi (hoping that the two crazy local lads who played a mini gig in the icehole haven't caught a cold either...)
