My heart is breaking, a truly horrible sight to see such a beautiful building reduced to very little.

I'm greatly saddened to learn of the cathedral fire, but have tempered gladness to also hear of the relics and artwork that's survived, and they'll be going through the rest of the cathedral in the daylight to see what else has survived/can be restored. A truly devastating thing to happen, the fire, to one of the world's most iconic Gothic cathedrals, which will, I suspect, be restored to its former architectural glory when all is said and done....

I too am very saddened to hear such horrible news, especially as I love organ music and one of Finland's top concert organists, Mr. Kalevi Kiviniemi, has played the organ at Notre Dame a lot...

Parisians value their history, art and culture. Notre Dame will rise again, greater and better than the version destroyed. I hope the cause of fire is determined soon so that it will never be repeated.

I'm in email contact with a former Unity member who lives in France, and he's saddened by the fire as well. He's mentioned the main parts of the cathedral are still standing, but there may be some artwork/relics in the way of statuary that may have been lost to the flames. He's also reiterated what I've heard on local news stations here that much of the relics/artwork were removed/stored elsewhere, as the cathedral started renovations/maintenance last summer. He also retold me it looks as if the fire was accidentally started due to the maintenance. If he updates me on the happenings about the cathedral, I'll try to pass along his info here.

Thanks to Riene for the heads up on this too.

IF I understood rightly, donations/contributions have been pouring in to some sort of account set up to help with expenses to help rebuild the cathedral...
I don't remember if I mentioned this here somewhere on the forum, but, my dad's father emigrated to the US around 1930 from Paris, and I wondered aloud if he'd ever attended anything at the cathedral. My dad never had the chance to ask him back in the day, as his father died in a car accident when my dad was 7 years old...I can only speculate that he did indeed attend services there at some point before emigrating....I did make minor mention about my paternal grandfather in the shout box...

Looks like most of the roof will need replaced, along with extensive clean-up from the smoke/water damage....definite kudos to the firefighters, and their chaplain, for the Herculean efforts in saving what they did....
EDIT: Just heard on the local news that there's been about $1 BILLION USD raised for repairs to the cathedral, with Lloyd's of London saying it could exceed $8 BILLION USD to effect the repairs. Apparently, the north tower was minutes away from collapsing into the south tower, which would have been severely devastating to the façade...
