Ireland are the most successful country at Eurovision - they won 7 times, also 3 years in a row! Clannad also tried to compete in Eurovision in 1973. They didn't, but there's a part in this video with Enya's sisters Deirdre, Brรญdรญn and Olive, where Olive starts singing/dancing with Brรญdรญn to 'Power To All Our Friends', Cliff Richard's famous song from Eurovision the same year ๐๐ถ I'm not the biggest fan of Eurovision but I do watch it; the earliest I remember seeing live was 2011 or 2012. The twins with the funny hair ( Jedward) were the earliest Irish entry I remember Recently the standard of songs has fallen - the last genuine winner of the Eurovision Song Contest was probably Salvador Sobral for Portugal in 2017. The best thing about Eurovision for the UK in recent years is probably Graham Norton's commentary ๐ He also remembers to pay tribute to the late Sir Terry Wogan; he did the UK's Eurovision commentary for most years between 1971 and 2008. They are both from Ireland too. The UK's last (possibly last ever) win was 25 years ago, Katrina and The Waves, in Ireland: Love Shine A Light โญ

Good catch, Draiocht an Dulra! It must have been difficult to create something as memorable as Riverdance was but without copycatting those again... In fact it would be great to give the honour to everyone involved in this by giving out the full credits instead of just writing something like "assorted musicians of various groups"... Nice to hear the voice of Brian Kennedy here by the way! Oh, and the winner that year, Secret Garden, is still among my favourites in music, I have all their albums (they are the original performers of "You Raise Me Up" by the way, and they have also collaborated with Moya on their song "The Dream" some years later)!
Suvi (who is actually a good friend of one of the backing vocalists of Katrina & The Waves' ESC winning song performance of 1997, and I once even ran an official fan club for that backing singer!)

They are both from Ireland too. The UK's last (possibly last ever) win was 25 years ago, Katrina and The Waves, in Ireland: Love Shine A Light โญ Ahem, so the Dutch winner of 2019, Duncan Laurence was nรณt genuine? >.< It only took us 44 years to win once more I have to disagree about standards.... Music, like everything, is very much a matter of taste anyway, and IMHO, Maneskin's win was genuine. If it isn't your style or cup of tea, that's up to you. It wasn't my personal favourite either for that matter but I didn't dislike it. I voted for France's Barbara Pravi with Voila twice! ANd I almost never vote, so that's a big thing, but the entire top 3 of 2021 was strong. The UK's entries however, have been less than stellar, and to their own detriment. 2021's entry wasn't bad, and did not deserve the zero pts from both juries and televote. But it's up to the UK to improve their record. They are not alone tho: Spain has been suffering for quite some time as well. And France, despite having some superb entries and decent results, are always in danger. Oh, let's not forget Germany either... another competitor for the bottom 5 region. The Songcontest has changed over the years. Ofcourse, it's a farcry from how it began, with 'proper' songs. But back then, the visual element wasn't important. Nowadays, it is, as Eurovision is also a conglomerate of broadcasters across Europe (and beyond) that strive to innovate how TV is made. And THAT has its effects on what broadcasters do in their respective countries: imagine big shows with leds, or even small innovations for smaller programmes, like for example something simple as the daily NEWS using led screens and absence of desks etc. It all starts with Eurovision. I became familiar with Eurovision during my teens I think, or pre-teens, as early as the late eighties. I wasn't the fan I have become today, but I liked a few songs here and there. Memories are a bit scattered when it comes to ESC (as fans abbreviate it), but if a familiar song comes along I light up Since recent years I also have my own Eurovision group on Facebook, and am in contact with a big fanbase. Last year I was very close to going to my first ever LIVE experience, but COVID through a wrench into those plans (here's hoping for a future one!). When it comes to Ireland, seeing what they throw at ESC, it saddens me that a country that was once so strong, is now losing its grip with the reality of the show. Some entries try to harken back to their glorydays, others want to push forward only to lose on feeble fronts like staging or icky vocals. Ireland is a country of songwriters and musicians, but sadly of late it does not show at Eurovision. The UK is quite similar, sitting on their laurels (as a member of the Big 5, being UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, who pay to help uphold the contest and in return do not have to compete in the two semi finals) lingering on their past wins and not willing to look forward and also forgetting that what works for Brits, does not always work for the rest of Europe. On top of that, recent behavious like Brexit hasn't helped to improve their chances at Eurovision. And it's not as if most of Europe is against the Brits... it's actually more their own attitude and demeanor towards ESC that alienates them. What is great to see at Eurovision is countries that are small but have acts that propel them into the eye of the fan base and remain there. Iceland for example ending up in the top 5 last year does wonders for their choices in later years, and for their reputation at the actual contest. Also, countries that never did well in the past that end up having a smasher hit at ESC and end up continuing that trend. It's what makes Eurovision so much fun! And, I have to say, after the terror years of the late 90s aND EARLY 2000s of late the quality of song has been improving, and also the voting has improved - it isn't as based on neighbourly favouritism and some countries actually give points to other countries that are not expected! ahh, the joys of being a Eurovision fan

Almost every year there ARE some great performance amongst all that "stage circus", for example back in 2013 Croatia had a marvellous entry with an all-male group Klapa s Mora, entitled "Mizerja". Too bad it did not reach the final... And earlier, Bosnia & Herzegovina had another moving and very melodic song "Lejla", performed by Hari Mata Hari back in 2006, while in 2004 Serbia & Montenegro had another wonderful entry with Zeljko Joksimovic and the song "Lane Moje".

I can honestly say, this year I'm rooting for the UK! Great song, great artist/voice! Reminded me a bit of Katrina, not in style but in composition - just a solid song! UK has a chance to win!

Sadly it isn't always deserved. Sometimes you shine, other times.... the entries are what I call "safe" and lack anything outstanding. Michael Schulte was great in 2018, and had a personal touch that was transported through his staging and performance, and touched the hearts of Europe, giving Germany a well deserved placement in the final. Unfortunately they don't seem to draw lessons from it...

Ha, found my special friend (aka Miriam Stockley, one of the backing vocalists in this performance) from the picture, she is celebrating just next to Katrina Leskanich (Katrina is the one who is holding the flower bouquet)! The funny thing is that Miriam is one of the backing singers on Ronan's "When You Say Nothing At All"!! Those were the days...

So today is the Eurovision final!! Like Topaz mentioned, for the UK the best part of it as of recent years is Graham's commentary However this year Sam Ryder is bound to get some points, and is one of the favourites to win! ๐ It's the UK or Ukraine who will win tonight ๐

As we know, Ukraine won the overall vote in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Next year, since Ukraine unfortunately isn't safe to be the hosts of ESC 2023, it will be hosted somewhere in the UK instead. However, the idea that Eurovision is finally returning to the UK is great! It should also honour Ukraine, of course. The location hasn't been confirmed, but interestingly Glasgow in Scotland is being discussed at the host city! Anyone here been?

I'm also looking forward to Eurovision being hosted somewhere in the UK too Although I don't mind which city will host, Glasgow would be a very nice choice. I have been to Glasgow many times before as my auntie and a few other family friends live there. Perhaps we could go and see it ๐ ๐ถ
