Something completely random as a first thread Cats! ๐โโฌAs we all know, Enya herself is, or was at least, particularly fond of cats, keeping about 12 cats at some point in the 1990s! I'm sure she has less cats around, if any, these days. Personally I like but not love cats, never owned any, but have seen plenty. Cats attacking other innocent animals is mostly why I'm not a big fan of them. That being said, I like the sound of Enya's 'very considerate' cats: "Do you have any pets?
Enya: 'Cats. Thereโs a cat actually just walking in the door beside me. Weโve always had cats because we lived in the countryside. Did they ever leave rabbitsโ innards on the doormat? No they did not! They were very cultured cats. Very considerate.'" What views do you have on cats? - Do you like cats? - Are you more of a cat lover or dog lover (or neither)? - Do you own a cat/kitten or multiple cats? - If you have a cat/cats, do they have any little tricks and stunts? - Would you keep 12 pet cats at once? - What do you think of the names that some of Enya's cats had? (Pearl, Mush-Mush, and a family cat Peewee) - Have you had your face painted/dressed up as a cat? - What beliefs/superstitions have you heard about cats, and do you believe them? - Do you have/collect ornaments or other cat bric-a-brac? - Can you convincingly miaow like a cat, or do a high-pitched whistle (so cats/dogs can hear)? - Name some of your favourite cartoon cats - Is there a song of Enya's (apart from Wild Child) that you associate with cats/that your cats like listening to? Answer as many of these that you wish to - I quite enjoy reading each of your responses

As my sister has got a cat called Myy (tortoiseshell mix, will be seven years old this coming autumn) and a young (less than one year old) male dog (Nordic Spitz) called Routa, it doesn't make any difference for me, though obviously the dog is a bit "wild child" at this stage (hunting dog in training) as he is so young. I'm not that crazy about animals that I would collect anything or dress up as cat/dog, but I can tell you that my sister's cat Myy absolutely hates me playing any of my instruments, not even synthesizer, even though she tolerates the radio being on when she is being taken care by us from time to time! Haven't tested music tolerance on Routa the dog though... Neither of these do tricks, the cat is simply too lazy for any and the dog too energetic and young to listen and obey properly. Routa has not spent much time with us, and although Myy the cat has holidayed with us many times, I wouldn't get myself either a pet cat or dog, just because I want to be able to play my instruments and live most of the time without too much cat/dog hair around me... If I would have a pet, I wouldn't name it after any of Enya's cats, I'm not superstitious at all either! Alongside Garfield, my favourite cartoon cat is a Finnish one called Jasso whose tail has its own life as well! And no, 12 pets (be them cats or dogs) is simply too much for me to handle... In fact, I don't associate any of Enya's songs with cats in particular although I know that there is a cat appearance on Wild Child music video. Suvi

I love cats, and have had both cats and dogs (and a tortoise, rabbits, hamsters, hermit crabs, fish, guinea pigs, tarantula, and briefly, a snake). No, we don't have any animals at all right now. The most cats we've ever had at one time is two. I would not have more than that. Ours have all been short haired and don't shed. They are strictly indoor cats as outdoor cats kill birds, and cars and the other wildlife around here--foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and owls--kill cats. Our cats haven't been interested in television or music. However, all have disliked the violin...but that might be because I'm awful at it! I don't collect cat things, nor have I dressed up as a cat, nor do I believe superstition. Sadly, superstition has caused a number of cats to be killed throughout history, and people kill cats to this day because of it. Two of our cats have been extremely clever, opening doors, holding conversations, knowing multiple words and commands. Our cats have been named after aircraft and historical characters. I don't trust people who dislike cats or any animals. Animals, especially cats, often require consent to be touched, and people who tend to violate consent don't like animals who retaliate. Pope Gregory IX (and a lot of medieval people) stupidly believed that cats were evil and ordered their slaughter....which led to a century of cats being tortured and killed in various horrific ways across Europe. Later, huge outbreak in flea-infected rats/mice directly lead to the Black Plague. A lack of cats didn't help that situation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPdqdqj3ghY Rossini's Meow Song never fails to crack me up. I don't know how those boys kept a straight face!

Yes, I like cats. My late Grandmother had lots of them on the farm. It just shows that you can be a happily married farmer's wife with 20 cats. She used to pick them up one after the other to remove their ticks and fleas. The younger kittens would squirm away while the older cats would sit still because they are used to it. I am a cat lover. I like the independence of a cat... I am also like that. I do not own dogs because they are too needy and lick too much. We had a large family dog when I was young. Too much chewed up dog kibble mixed with saliva. Strange how I miss that particular dog right now. I currently have two cats. Vlekkie, a 4-year old tuxedo cat with a bowtie moustache. Milo, a 10-year old Siamese cat with blue eyes. The are both outside cats. I live in a rural area with lots of space to play. They like to play with tennis balls and bigger balls. Vlekkie is neutered and still acts like a kitten. Very playful. He likes to rocket launch outside around the house. Milo likes to bunny hop but his legs are a bit stiff in the winter because of his age. Two cats are enough. Vlekkie is a very jealous creature. Both my cats like classical and Enya's music. Enya's cats have cute names. Never dressed up as a cat. Halloween is not a thing in South Africa. I am not a superstitious person but those about cats are very interesting. Putting butter on your cat's paws to stop them returning to the old house. Put a cat in the empty cradle of newlyweds, and a baby will arrive soon. If a cat sneezes three times, someone will catch a cold. When a cat washes its ears a lot, it will rain. Having a cat in a theater is good luck. ...and ancient Egypt and cats... I am a minimalist so I don't collect much. My favourite cartoon cats include: Garfield, Sylvester, Oggy and Felix. If Lazy Days would have I video... It could feature cats perhaps.

Cats truly are fascinating! I've learnt a fair bit just from reading all the responses and opening the links - I really appreciate the time taken for each response so far ๐ ๐ธ

I once met a cat who bite me, to show that he didn't want to go out of the room. That was not nice. Much later that evening, I drove into the hospital, because friends told me that such a bite can become dangerous. Infections and so. I was lucky I didn't get anything bad from it.
Apart from that, I like cats, I just have no experience with them.
Two weeks ago, there was a playable cat based race released in an online video game I know. Humanoid shape.

Cats appear to be quite an interesting topic! ๐ธ I do like cats, I also like dogs. ๐๐ It depends on the individual animal; neither a cat nor dog lover in particular. I am more drawn to birds and fish (I have pet goldfish, and I sometimes end up birdwatching from windows ๐๐๐ฆ) Although I have never owned a cat or dog, I know many others who do, and I see both fairly often, dogs are usually with owners on a walk, and there is a cat wandering around the neighbourhood every other day at home. There seems to be more you can do with a pet dog, but cats are often more clever and discreet. The experience I have with cats is limited; I have stroked a cat before, the last time was probably a few years ago, but I don't think I have looked after a real cat. (I did play on the Nintendo 3DS game 'Nintendogs + Cats', where I named a virtual ginger tabby cat Sunflower) About Enya's previous cats' names, they are funny choices, but are all probably suitable trait-wise, haha. I associate two of those names with a cartoon whale and a cartoon mushroom a bit too much (although the cat was named Pearl before Spongebob began, and Mush-Mush definitely was too). I think it's good that the cats had playful names, rather than a made-up royal title. I wouldn't keep that many cats! If I had to (and had a large enough place to keep them all) then maybe I wouldn't mind looking after 12 decent cats. However, I would much rather keep 12 goldfish at a time! I don't really do high maintenance though, and the costs of looking after pets that need a vet are probably close to the expenses of looking after children. (I don't really see myself with either of these responsibilities in the future.) I know how to whistle high-pitched enough that they sometimes stop and look at me, and I can miaow like a cat, yes ๐ When cats or dogs walk or run past, I often look and smile at them ๐ Some people like the entertainment or the usefulness of animals but don't really care enough for their welfare. It particularly saddens me to hear of or see animals that have been hurt or neglected by people, even thinking of it is rather sad. For beliefs, I knew that the Ancient Egyptian people held cats in high regard; they were also mummified like humans after passing away. Before reading this thread I knew just a couple of superstitions about cats. There is the common 'black cats bring bad luck' but in some countries (Ireland, Scotland, Japan) they say it is good luck if a black cat crosses your path. I just find it interesting when that happens, rather than lucky or unlucky, haha. Also the 'cats have nine lives' belief, probably not true (although I find 9 a special number).๐ก Interesting that no-one else here seems to have dressed up as a cat When I was younger (aged about 7-9) I dressed up as a black cat for a Halloween competition and won ๐ธ I also wore a lion/lioness-themed leotard and mane outfit (others did too) for a ballet show. Also in ballet, there is a step called 'pas de chat', French for the 'step of the cat' At home there have always been quite a few random cat ornaments, but not an actual collection. Currently I own a shopping bag and a bag for accessories with cats as part of the design, haha When I was little I had various clothes with a cat on the design, and a probably a few toys featuring cats, usually big cats like lions, tigers and leopards. There are so many cartoon cats! Even more that I might recognise but not name immediately/they weren't given a name Just a few favourites, roughly categorised Famous cats - Garfield, Thomas (Tom and Jerry), The Cat In The Hat Other sweet cats - Hello Kitty, Marie (The Aristocats), Yoko and Juanita (from Timothy Goes To School), Jess (the black-and-white cat from Postman Pat)Witches' cats - Mog (from the book/cartoon Meg and Mog), Salem Saberhagen (not exactly a cartoon, from Sabrina and the Teenage Witch, never watched it but I read about him from an annual)Big cats - Aslan (The Chronicles of Narnia), Mufasa and Sarabi (The Lion King, not a fan of the other lions as much), Richard Parker (tiger from Life of Pi), Pink Panther, and Tigger! (Winnie The Pooh) Perhaps Storms In Africa with the lion cubs in the music video could be associated with cats in that way, a bit like Wild Child with Pearl the cat. These pieces don't really remind me of cats, but I just thought of making some slight associations. The staccato notes in some instrumentals like Silver Inches and Willows On The Water could be considered slightly cat-like. Although the Oisin part of Triad is linked to a deer, it could also remind you of a cat slowly wandering around. I wonder if Enya would ever compose a piece and name it after one of her cats? ๐ธ

..so it is a winter morning in my part of the world. As I was making my bed that silly tuxedo cat of mine decided to jump between the blankets and covers. Is this normal for a 4-year old cat? He still acts pretty much like a kitten. That other Siamese cat's fur gets darker in the winter. Did you know that Siamese cats Are Temperature-Sensitive Albinos, a.k.a. Walking Heat Maps? When it comes out of the womb it is pure white... the warm parts stay white and the cold parts gradually turn darker then black. Milo the Siamese cat
Vlekkie the Tuxedo cat

We are currently enslaved to 2 cats! I've always had an orange tabby named some variation of 'see more the cat'. The past 2 have been simply c-mor. That is where my online persona of CMORCAT originated.

I'm allergic to the critters, but not as badly as in my teens. My older brother/sister-in-law have had as many as 12 cats along with 4-5 dogs at a time, not to mention turtles, rabbits, rats. Don't know how many cats they have these days, if any, seeing as they moved to Florida about 6 months ago. They still have 3 dogs that made the move with them.
