I have a theory that Amarantine wasn't intended as the next album for ADWR, and instead a different one.
Watermark hinted Smaoitim (Shepherd Moons), Angeles in SM (god like motif of next album in TMoT), Once You Had Gold (Pilgrim in ADWR).
I may be overthinking but it might be true that at least one song is hinting the next album. You may say that Flora's Secret is for Amarantine but hear me out.
What if it was for motherhood, or something motherly?
Isobella, Sandman, The Comb of the Winds, and Midnight Blue (later became AWC) was my candidate for this. She has a lot of songs omitted from ADWR.
What do you think? Do you think there's an album that we never got?

This was interesting to think about, but I think Enya doesn't really intend for the next album to be a certain theme, it's more of a 'go with the [Orinoco] flow' thing I see the Smaoitรญm/Smaointe idea (that would be my favourite of Enya's songs in Irish so far ๐) but not the other two so much. I kind of see this though, to me it doesn't fit ADWR thematically, more Amarantine or the And Winter Came (more summery) lovey-dovey stuff..ย Maybe, although if it's anything to do with Eithne in a biographical way I would have thought the late 90s would have been when she'd have released something 'motherly' (think the Moya album cover Mรกire with baby Aisling on the cover I think ๐). Life turned out quite differently from the norm for Eithne and that's absolutely fine, inspiring even. ๐ฅฐ True, and I agree that Song of the Sandman and especially Isobella are particularly beautiful songs ๐ถ๐ Overall I think it was more that Amarantine could have been different in aspects such as the design and song themes, and it happened to follow the very successful, comfortable listening of A Day Without Rain, but that there isn't exactly a replacement for the album either. For an actual 'album we never had', it's all the early music by Enya, particularly the original Frog Prince songs (only Dreams seems like an untouched Enya version). Also the other Celts pieces, there could be a whole soundtrack album of Enya's mid-80s compositions ๐คฉ๐ถ

as a long time listener of Enya songs, I've often thought some songs were ' out of the box ' for a certain album, thus hinting towards the next. It's only logical in terms of progression and evolving. I would agree that it isn't intentional. It could be they're working on songs that get shelved for the time being as an album finishes, and then they picked it up for the next. However, that thought doesn't count for the latter albums, where b-sides became rarer. We'll have to wait and see which songs from DSI hint at the feel of the next album....
