I have a different interpretation. I could never say goodbye
To the sadness in my eyes
The way I have always read this is that the sadness is so permanent, so ingrained, that "I could never say goodbye" to it because it will be there forever. Or, even more melancholy, doesn't want to say goodbye to it because the sadness/loss is all that's left of the person/relationship/memory. It depends on whether you view it as a song about loss of a lover, or of a friend/family member.

Interesting interpretations, everyone.
If the lines weren't enigmatic, they wouldn't be Roma. I've occasionally wished I could sit down with her and ask questions about the lyrics.

I was listening to a DSI list on mu Ipod today and it struck me only today that ICNSG, RYS and DotW are linked. To me it seems like they all refer to the same relationship. Just have a listen to those three songs solely and you'll notice!

Well, DotW is the song where the relationship is still good - all the others are after the breakup!

DotW as a relationship ? You may be right, and it would be a beautiful finding I had missed. In my defense, though, I'd say it wasn't very obvious. ...Isn't this album even greater if you know how to go with it ?

Yes, how one views the songs can change over time. I associate these songs with a loved one - a father or mother - who has died: "So I Could Find My Way" (dedicated to Nicky's mother) "I Could Never Say Goodbye" (Enya's father) "Solace" and "Remember Your Smile" (Enya's father)

Enya's father didn't die until after the album was released, the songs would proabably have been written 18 months before his death if Eithne was following her winter seasonal writing regime. River of Songs by Maire Brennan is definitely about Leo.
In an interview Eithne said ICNSG was a personal song about heartbreak, though it could also fit grief.

OK, thanks I have no idea what condition Leo would have been in while Enya was writing those songs.

That's just the factual background. Just because it's not Eithne's father, doesn't mean that it can't resonate with emotional loss through grief, rather than romatic loss. Which now you've mentioned it, means I'm going to have to listen agin from that perspective.

In my defense, though, I'd say it wasn't very obvious. ...Isn't this album even greater if you know how to go with it ? In Diamonds on the Water, there Γ‘re references to a relationship, if you listen carefully. I didn't hook onto this until after I had my ipod on while walking, and playing a flipped around list of DSI songs. During DotW, the relationship is fine, plain sailing. With Remember Your Smile, the relationship is over but she thinks of him fondly still, recalling good times they had. Even in the Shadows would tie in to a period close after the break up, where everything reminds her of him and it's hard for her to let go. I Could Never Say Goodbye could refer to her remembering the relationship somewhere in between EitS and RyS... that period where the hurt is receding but still there, but healing has started setting in and one can think of it as a period of learning. At least, that's how I grasp the content matter in these four songs. If you wish to put it in order, it would be: 1. Diamonds on the Water 2. Even in the Shadows 3. I Could Never Say Goodbye 4. Remember Your Smile Ofcourse, in all cases with Enya, your own interpretation matters most, but I wanted to share this as it simply struck me and suddenly seemed so obvious.

I think DSI is an album about sound landscapes, memories of Enya. SICFMW is definitely not about Nicky's mother. For me she broke off momentarily to go to the studio. She says that his love has guided her, kept her well, a stable love different from EITS that speaks of a relationship that ended and that had ups and downs. She wonders why this love is over. She is angry because she did not understand it. RYS is a slow song where she reminds him that he needs a calmer rhythm of work and that when they are together, for example in Eze, everything gets calmer and she remembers his smile. DOTW It's a song about happiness on summer holidays. She sees the rays of the sun reflecting in the water that look like diamonds

Oh, remembering that they are two relationships. EITS terminated, SICFMW is the current

Eithne in a video on EnyaTV says explicitly that SICFMW is about Roma's mother.

Eithne in a video on EnyaTV says explicitly that SICFMW is about Roma's mother. Nicky's mother, Mona Ryan. Eithne had known her for many years, were quite close and the lady lived to her nineties. I won't be surprised if Nicky's mother regarded Eithne like a daughter she never had.
