I've worked up an English adaptation for WSTHH, which I admit was a challenge as the song doesn't really follow the traditional verse-chorus format...I think I've captured the sense of longing and yearning the song conveys in the original Loxian, but I'd like to hear members' thoughts. The English version works to the melody, i.e the English version can be sung in time with the melody...Hope you like it Water Shows the Hidden Heart(adapted from the book ‘Water Shows the Hidden Heart’ by Roma Ryan and from the album 'Amarantine'). Journey of journeys The heart remembers Love neverending Love unrequited Beyond this dreaming This moonless darkness Must lie some heaven Somewhere a love-shaped eternity Love breathes…I hear your last words I dream our last kiss I keep this secret Within my heart Time cannot free me This lost love haunts me I hear your voice say “Whom you love is within your heart”Do you remember And yearn for this same love? As I remember Each precious moment? Will you remember This perfect dream we shared? Or do hearts broken Stay so forever? Beyond these questions Beyond this solitude Must lie a journey’s end… Love bleeds…Journey of journeys The heart remembers Love neverending Love unrequited Beyond this dreaming This moonless darkness Must lie some heaven Somewhere a love-shaped eternity Love leaves…I sing you my passion I sing you my love But you will not hear me You spurned every touch Must I now leave This dream to fade away? Journey of journeys The heart remembers Love neverending Love unrequited Beyond this dreaming This moonless darkness Must lie some heaven Somewhere a love-shaped eternity Love grieves…Wow, thank you for this! What a treat to be catching up on MH today and find this. It's a grand piece of work - I love it.

Thank you Kerry. What an amazing response this adaptation has had. I'm keen to hear if people have tried singing the English lyric to the recorded melody. Hopefully it fits as well as it does in my head!
Good to see you back on the board!

I've sung it--when no one was around to hear me!--and the lyrics/structure flow well with the tempo of the music.

I've also sung the lyrics and they match the melody. Now, how are you doing on TRS & LTAP?

I have a question about the lyrics to Someone Said Goodbye:
The tune itself strikes me as upbeat, a happy tune, like it's a day with the sun out and summer coming, while the lyrics are about a broken heart.
Does anyone else feel a disconnect between the tune and the words?

I have a question about the lyrics to Someone Said Goodbye: The tune itself strikes me as upbeat, a happy tune, like it's a day with the sun out and summer coming, while the lyrics are about a broken heart. Does anyone else feel a disconnect between the tune and the words? Not at all! The words & music are perfect together. The song is about two people breaking up; one of them doesn't want to let go of the relationship, the other doesn't understand why the other won't accept it, and won't go away. The person initiating the breakup is basically saying, "get lost, go away!" The music is very sassy and complements the tale of someone walking away from the relationship. Sometimes I think the person walking away is feigning being sassy and carefree about ending things to hide their own hurt, other times I think the person is truly glad to cut things loose. Anyway, no disconnect here between music and lyric. It's a good song, and an interesting one. Hearing Enya do a love song is one thing; hearing her do a song about someone slamming the door shut in someone's face is quite another. This should have been a highly promoted single.

I've never considered that before, that it's a one-sided breakup. Hmm, must go listen to the song again!

(ACK to your pop quiz! It's summer! I don't have to think right now! I'm on vacation!!!)
---------------------------
Anyway, back to topic. Looking at it from that POV, I can see this as a relationship is over, and one of the two is clueless. "The warmth is over, but you don't know why." One of the two wants out, and the other is over-analyzing the situation. The person who wants out keeps asking the other to think about WHY their relationship isn't going to work--why do you hide so much inside? Why can't you ever see the silver lining? Is there a reason things don't work out for yourself? Think about what is going on here!
I wonder if this is a case of trying to break up with somone who's clinging to the relationship, or if it's a case of counseling the friend who has broken up with someone else? You could read this either way.
--------------------------
Summer, when the day is over there’s a heart a little colder; someone said goodbye, but you don’t know why. Somewhere there is someone keeping All the tears they have been weeping, Someone said goodbye, But you don’t know why.
Is there a reason Why a broken heart begins to cry? Is there a reason You were lost although you don’t know why? Give me a reason Why you never want to say goodbye. If there’s a reason, I don’t know why.
Always looking for meaning, All the time you keep believing, But I don’t know why You won’t say goodbye.
Even when the sun is shining You don’t see the silver lining, But I don’t know why You won’t say goodbye.
Is there a reason Why a broken dream can never fly? Is there a reason You believe and then you close your eyes? Give me a reason Why you hide away so much inside. If there’s a reason, I don’t know why.
Is there a reason Why a broken heart begins to cry? Is there a reason You were lost although you don’t know why? Give me a reason Why you never want to say goodbye. If there’s a reason, I don’t know why. I don’t know why. I don’t know why. I don’t know why.

Hmmm, someone counseling a friend who has been broken up with or is clearly still in a relationship gone bad sounds closer...at least the wording makes me think this. It sounds like a friend trying to get the person who is in this relationship to think why it is that there are tears and broken hearts...and why their hearts seem colder towards one another. The love has died, but one won't accept that fact. Maybe not because their love is so strong, but because they would rather not be "alone" or let go of what was once had. That one is the dreamer, while their partner is the realist. (geez, how many of us have been either one of these people before?) If the person doing the breaking up is saying those things to their partner, that seems a little cold. It makes more sense that a close friend of the person who got (or is being) broken up with is saying, hey, it is so clear! Why do you want to stay if you both are feeling this way? If there's a reason...I don't know why. Unless...the person has broken up with the dreamer long ago and they Still can't let go. Then I can see being blunt and to the point with them. I think I understand this section a little better now... Even when the sun is shining You don’t see the silver lining, But I don’t know why You won’t say goodbye. In either theory, I think the person saying these words are saying "look, you don't see it now, but this break up is the best thing that could happen." Thank you Riene for offering a different point of view on this song. And TC, I think this should have been a single as well. /essay and gives an apple to the teacher.

Yes, that was what bothered me: if the singer is saying this to an "ex" - well, it sounds very heartless. Given that Roma writes the lyrics, dare we speculate? Maybe one of her kids broke up with someone, and Mom is trying to show her the bright side? Or maybe not.........I'll go hide now. (runs away quickly)

*grins* Could always be Aigle saying goodbye to Warner, too. Are these songs autobiographical for Roma, or written about events in Enya's life or just plain contrived?

*grins* Could always be Aigle saying goodbye to Warner, too. Are these songs autobiographical for Roma, or written about events in Enya's life or just plain contrived? We'll never know, but I'd imagine the vast majority are simply fictional. There may be real-life events that inspire the idea for the lyrics, but the feelings arising from such situations are universal, and the final versions of the songs needn't have anything to do with the Trio's real lives.

I think I remember Roma once saying that the lyrics were not autobiographical but instead were based around a particular theme or emotion.
